Slow Technology

February 15, 2023

In a world of instant notifications and endless scrolling, I've been drawn to the concept of "slow technology" — digital tools designed to encourage mindfulness and reflection rather than constant engagement.

What would our digital lives look like if our tools were designed to respect our attention rather than compete for it? If they encouraged deep thought rather than quick reactions?

I've been experimenting with this in my own digital habits. Setting aside specific times for email and social media. Using physical notebooks for initial thoughts. Reading printed books instead of digital ones when possible.

The results have been subtle but meaningful. I find myself thinking more clearly, being more present in conversations, and feeling less anxious about staying "connected" at all times.

Technology should serve our human needs, not reshape them to serve technological imperatives.
